Attractives description / Facilities of Belo Horioznte

About 400 dolls and puppets adorn this curious museum. It is the collection and the histoy of Giramundo, the most important group of doll teathers in the contry, winner of several national en international prizes. The Museum was crated in 2001 and exhibits all the characters used by Giramundo in the 35 years of life.

The buildings of the 1920's are been the main collection of the neoclassical style in Belo Horizonte. Rui Barbosa Square, widely known as the Railroad Station Square, has its origins linked to the foundation of the city. The old railway station was the gateway to the new capital. As part of the architectural complex of the Railroad Station Square, there is the Minas Gerais Federal University Cultural Center Building, the Souza Pinto Sawmill and the Santa Teresa Overpass that has symbolized the modernity of the new capital.

This building stands out as the city's only example of the neogothic style of Portuguese inspiration.Built in 1914 in order to house the first legislative assembly of the capital, the Deliberative Body as well as the public library, the has a magnificent internal and external decoration. After it was regarded as of historical interest,it was refurbished and rededicated in 1997 in order to house the Belo Horizonte Cultural Center.

A multiuse cultural space occupies today the old building of UFMG Music School. Built in 1926, it was totally restored to receive the UFMG Conservatory. The collection, on permanent exhibition, consists of two collections: Brasiliana, which gathers art objects, books and rare documents, and Contemporary Art, which represents the art produced in Minas in the 60's.

Minascentro

Built in 1926, the building was adapted to shelter the first covention center of the mineira capital. It still is one of the most important spaces of the city events. It maintains its beautiful façade in neolclassic style, completely preserved. The internal area is more than 30 thousand square meters in size and it was reformed to host events with the best infraestructure and confort.

Inaugurrated at the beginiing of last century , the church soon became a traditional relilgious meeting pointof society. The Saint Joseph Church has the shape of a perfect Latin croos. If it seen from Acaiaca's building (in front of) it seems been under a wine glass formed by the stairs and side slopes.

At the times of Hamlet Curral del-Rey, it was a chapel made of water and daub, dedicated to Our Lady of Boa Viagem (Good Trip), patron of the muleteers. Today, it is a beautiful cathedral in neogothic style with wonderful stained-glass windows, high altar worked in Carrara marble. Our Lady of Boa Viagem has become the guardian of Belo Horizonte and is celebrated every year on August 15th.

The work of de Lourdes church was started along with the construction of the capital. The architectural project neo-gothic style, received adaptations and the church was only finally inaugurated in 1923. Thirty five year later, in a consecration solemnity, Pope Pio XII raised the Lourdes Church to the category of Basilica. Brides use to stay in line at least 3 years to have their wedding in Lourdes Church.

Settled in the former "Chácara do Sapo" where Aarão Reis, the engineer in charge of the project of the new capital resided,the park was inaugurated in 1897.It was the first leisure and contemplation area of the city. It was inspired upon the French parks of the La Belle Époque, with rosebushes and bandstand. In the midst of the green, there are 50 species of trees and several different leisure options. The space is also used nowadays for ecological education awareness. There are still other attractions in the park, such as the Orchid House, the Francisco Nunes Theater and the Palácio das Artes.

Palácio das Artes, inaugurated in 1970, is the largest and most varied cultural complex in Minas Gerais. It comprises three theaters, three art galleries, a movie theater, a bookstore a coffee shop and photography exhibition space. It offers high quality programs for the several expressions in arts. The building was projected by Oscar Niemeyer and it also houses the Minas Gerais Handcraft Center.

A rich collection of Colonial Sacred art, a picture gallery, several objects such as domestic utensils, work and punishment tools, sculptures, emblems, armament and a lot more. One of the major turistic atrattions of the city, the fair started at Praça da Liberdade (Freedom Square )back in 1969. It became a meeting point of several generations since the richness and the diversity of the pieces of work exhibit were a success, attracting people from all over the country. It ended up by extrappolating the limits of the square and it was transferred to the Afonso Pena Avenue in 1991. It haapens every Sunday and gathers around 3 thousand exhibitors.

The Souza Pinto sawmill was one of the first builidins of the capital to make use of irion structures. One of the beatiful sample of industrial architecture from the beginning of the century, the sawmill was registered as a historical patrimony in 1981 and restore in 1997. Today, it is a convention center where shows, fairs courses, congresses and exhibitions take place.
